Hero’s Moment

In a previous blog post about playtesting updates I briefly mentioned a Hero’s Moment. This is a fun little mechanic we created to make critical failures more exciting. Failure can be powerful moment of learning, especially when the stakes are high.

Hero’s Moment can happen once per level and is triggered by a critical failure (the worst possible outcome) on a talent check or any type of attack roll. When triggered, roll 1d12 using the Hero’s Moment table to determine a bonus your hero will receive. Most of these bonuses can be used at a later time.

In a recent playtest, I was using a level one hero with the Sniper power. I lined up a shot and failed miserably, triggering a hero’s moment. I rolled a 12 on the Hero’s Moment table, turning my missed attack into a overcharged superpower attack.

I dealt an insane amount of damage, completely annihilating the enemy—something I wasn’t intending to do. Explaining to the police why there are splattered remnants of someone I was supposed to capture is not a good look. Definitely a learning moment.

We hope Hero’s Moment adds a little extra fun to the game, and once per level turns a critical failure into an exciting moment.

Cheers!
