Recap and Upcoming Events for We Can Be Heroes, A Superhero TTRPG
Hi, everybody! It’s been quite awhile since I’ve been able to write a blog post and there is a lot to recap from the past couple of months, plus we have some news and the upcoming convention schedule to share.
Recap:
We did it! We Can Be Heroes officially released on December 10th, 2024! We spent the summer months and early fall vigorously editing the book until we were able to send off a final copy to Jostens for printing. In late November we received our order from Jostens and by early December shipments were on their way to our backers around the world.
We had originally aimed to have the game released November in time for AcadeCon in Dayton, OH, but missed our mark by just a few weeks. We actually received our first bound copy just days after the convention.
We did receive the first books in time for Ghengis Con, though! This is a smaller annual indie comic convention that our incredible artist, Max Bare, typically attends in Cleveland, OH. It felt really good to be able to hand Max his personal copy. He’s just as proud as we are.
Since then, Spencer and I ran a flurry of demos over the winter months at local game stores and game bars/cafes around the greater Cleveland/Akron area. Definitely reach out if you’re interested in having a demo at your local shop. Likewise, let us know if you’re interested in running a game and need help getting started!
We’ve been running a combined hero building workshop and demo based on the first half of our starter adventure. Our first hero building workshop was at Acedecon; people loved it so much that we’ve been incorporating it into our demos. It’s pretty awesome to see the unique heroes people come up with and then get to see them come to life in the demo.
In addition to the games at local shops, there have also been games happening in our Discord channel! Thank you so much to our Discord community members, both GMs and players! It’s been amazing to see this community grow.
Spencer and Ryan attended the GAMA Expo in Louisville, KY a few weeks ago. It was a great opportunity to network and learn about the state of the indie gaming industry. They got to play some awesome indie games as well as some bigger releases, and meet creators and retailers from across the country.
We also recently had a great review of We Can Be Heroes come out from Dave Thaumavore! Dave did a great job reviewing core aspects of the game. He had some great praise of the game, and some valid criticisms. It’s always tough to hear the criticisms of something you’ve worked hard on, but it seemed fair and mostly preference related. You can check out the video here and be sure to chime in and drop a comment if you’ve played the game!
Upcoming:
An adventure module is something we’ve been wanting to do since before launching our Kickstarter last spring. For the last several months we’ve been hard at work developing this. We’ve made a ton of progress, but still have a lot of work to do. You’ll be hearing much more about this in the coming months.
We’ve also been planning out our 2025 convention schedule. Right now we have Origins, GenCon, and AcadeCon on the docket and hope to add more. On top of this we’re looking to set up more demos at game shops. If you haven’t been to a demo yet, we’d love to have you!
Origins Game Fair
Origins takes place June 19-22 in Columbus, OH. We’ll have a booth and will be running seven events: two hero building workshops and five adventure sessions. We’ve built two separate adventures for the convention:
Technical Difficulties
As renowned heroes, you’re no strangers to high-stakes missions—but this time, the call for help comes straight from the top. Q-Helix Robotics, the world’s leading robotics manufacturer, has personally reached out, desperate to recover a stolen shipment of cutting-edge technology. A high-security transport was hit by unknown assailants while en route to Fort Marston. Now, highly classified tech meant for the U.S. military is in the wrong hands. With global security on the line, it’s up to you to track down the missing shipment, uncover the mastermind behind the heist, and stop their villainous plan from unfolding before it’s too late!
Demolition and Premonition
Center City is in chaos as a string of bombings shakes its foundations! The notorious Demolitions Expert and her squad of goons have left a trail of destruction, but their ultimate target remains unknown. With the clock ticking, will you crack the case in time and thwart her explosive master plan, or will Center City face its biggest detonation yet? The fate of the city is in your hands!
GenCon
GenCon runs July 31st - August 3rd in Indianapolis, IN. We’ll be at the Indie Game Developer Network (IGDN) booth and running events for We Can Be Heroes in the IGDN room. We’ll have a total of 10 events: four hero building workshops and six adventure sessions. We’ll be running the two adventures from Origins, plus a new adventure:
Fists and Stones
What starts as a routine crime-fighting mission takes a turn when a simple jewelry store heist spirals into something far more dangerous! As the heroes move to stop a gang of smash-and-grab thieves, they quickly realize they’re just pawns in the sinister machinations of a small-time bruiser that just got a big upgrade. Stop Coronel Clobber before he goes from two-bit thug to full-blown supervillain!
AcadeCon
AcadeCon will be November 7th - 9th in Dayton, OH. At this point it’s pretty far away, so we haven’t mapped out what events we’ll be running just yet.
